LAKE FOREST – For the fourth consecutive year, OC Parenting Magazine has named Etnies Skatepark the county’s best.

“This is a great recognition,” said Vicky Blethen, recreation program manager with the city. “It means we are in (tune) with our market that we’re looking to reach. We will not only be able to say with the expansion that we’ll have a world-class park but that it’s also a good place for parents to take their kids.”

Construction on a 16,000-square-foot expansion at the park is expected to begin in late September and is scheduled for completion in January. The expansion will make the skate park about 60,000 square feet – one of the largest in the world, Blethen said.

The expanded park will include features found at famous skating places throughout the world. Highlights include:

•Recreating the China Banks, a world famous skate spot in San Francisco’s China Town, using a similar brick-stamped bank;

•A 3-1/2 foot deep mini-bowl, ideal for beginning riders to practice;

•A street run with a six-stair pier that ends with a rooftop hit, a feature similar to that found at the first Maloof Money Cup skateboarding competition;

•A backyard-style, blue-colored pool with shallow end stairs and two death boxes (the overflow drain at the edge of a pool) and stone coping;

•A cradle where riders can go inside or over the backside and carve the opening.

“Our goal was to bring an Oregon-style park with lots of free flow to Orange County and give our park a very unique and signature addition,” said Nick Gates, Etnies Skatepark coordinator. “Many skaters seek out skate parks in Oregon because of their organic feel. Many of the parks in Southern California are just a repetition of the same thing over and over again. The expansion will also include a new barbecue area for our skate camp programs.”

Professional skateboarders Ryan Sheckler and Paul Rodriguez will throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies game on Wednesday, September 1. “Warmin’ up my arm for the Dodger game tomorrow! Throwing the first pitch with my boy P-Rod,” said Sheckler via a statement on Twitter on Tuesday.

Both members of the newly formed Street League, Sheckler and Rodriguez recently competed in the the inaugural event of the tour in Phoenix, Ariz. Sheckler did not advance beyond prelims, but Rodriguez finished seventh overall in the final results.

Currently sitting in 4th place in the NL East division, the Dodgers game begins at 12:10 PM ET.
